Artists Dilemma
1. Provide an overview of the problem your group was given and what you were required to do for your client.
Our group was given a problem to solve which we were to give a recommendation to our client. There was an artist who had an upcoming art show where he will sell his work. His spending budget is $180 and each pastel cost $5 to make and each watercolor costs $15 to make. The pastels sell for $40 and the watercolors sell for $100. What amount of paintings would give the most amount of profit.
2. Explain how to obtain the best-possible recommendation for the problem. Be sure to include variable names, constraints and corresponding inequalities, the GeoGebra graph (properly labelled), the expression that you needed to maximize, and an explanation of how you know your recommendation is the best possible (be sure each vertex of the feasible region was tested!).
Our group started off by coming up with random numbers for pastel and watercolor paintings. We made a table and used the contraints to come up with profit. For pastel we multiplied the number of paintings by 5 for the cost and then multiplied it by 40 to find the cost. For watercolors we multiplied it by 15 for the cost and then multiplied it by 100 to find the profit. In geogebra we entered the equations to find the feasible region. This helped us find the max profit and the minimum.
3. Explain the group roles (what they were responsible for and who was assigned the role).
The group roles were the facilitator, geogebra guru, spokesperson, and documentor. My role was the spokes person and I was to explain things to our client. When we came up with our recommendation I explained it to our client and made sure that she was convinced. Annette was the documenter and she wrote down all of the important information to help us solve the problem. Zoha's role was the geogebra person and she entered everything in geogebra to find the feasible region.
Reflection
Our experience with the client went really well and we engaged very well. We started of with talking about what we are going to do to finish the problem and then did that. Our client asked us very good questions and explained to us that she needed to be more convinved. So we worked as hard as we could to come up for a reccomandation that would have her convinced/
a. One celebration for each group member, including yourself. Be sure to include the Habits of a Mathematician.
Each of our group members had a celebration for something that went really well. Personally I felt like Jacob and I both did a really good job testing out solutions and numbers to find a recommendation. Zoha did a wonderful job working with geogebra and she used the information we had to find the feasible region. Annette was our documentor and did a great job tracking all of the important information that we would need for later on. All of the information she wrote down helped us in finding out the best possible solution.
b. Your perspective on how well your group worked together. What did your group do really well? What contributed to that success? What was one challenge your group had? How did you overcome that challenge? If you did not overcome it, what would you do differently to overcome it if you were to do this again?
Our group worked very well together and we all used our time wisely to get things done efficiently. We completed our roles very well and each did something to help the entire group out. Our group had the challenge of giving our client just enough information to be convinced. We all worked together extremely hard to come up with something. We didn't overcome it due to the amount of time we had but were very close. I think next time we should spend the least amount of time working on the small things and try to figure out the big question.
c. Reflecting on your role, what do you think was your biggest strength in that role? In what ways can you grow in that role (what could you do better with more practice and opportunity)?
I felt like I executed my role very well and contributed to the group very well. I did a good job as the spokesperson trying to convince our client. Next time I could prepare about what to say to our client/teacher so they will be more convinced or understanding.
